About Me
I am a Professor of Religion at Kalamazoo College and chair of the Religion department. I specialize in the study of Early Christianity, biblical studies, Mormonism, and gender studies. I received my ThD and MTS from Harvard Divinity School, and BA in Philosophy and Religion from Pace University.
Because of my research expertise I am frequently interviewed for print, podcasts, documentaries, and radio. I’ve been quoted in the New York Times, Washington Post, Mississippi Today, Salt Lake Tribune and more. My editorials have appeared in Slate, The Conversation, Deseret News, Salt Lake Tribune, and Religion and Politics. I have been a frequent guest on RadioWest and featured in the award winning documentary Church & State.
Among my roles I have been a Visiting Associate Professor of Women's Studies and Sexuality at Harvard Divinity School and Research Associate in the Women's Studies in Religion Program. I have also served Director of the Women, Gender, and Sexuality program at Kalamazoo College. I am the current editor in chief of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought.
My publications treat the intersection of religion, gender, sexuality, and kinship. My first book Resurrecting Parts: Early Christians on Desire, Reproduction, and Sexual Difference (Routledge 2015) explores how early Christians looked to the resurrection of the genitals to discern their values about gender and sexuality.
Turning to Mormon studies, my second book Tabernacles of Clay: Sexuality and Gender in Modern Mormonism (UNC 2020) examines the tradition through the lens of the history of sexuality. The book received numerous starred reviews and the “Best Book” in 2020 award from the Mormon History Association.
My most recent book is Queering Kinship in the Mormon Cosmos (UNC 2024). This research reexamines and resignifies Mormon cosmology in the context of queer theory, offering a fresh perspective on divine relationships, gender fluidity, and the concept of kinship itself.
I am also the editor or co-editor of several books on early Christianity, biblical studies, and Mormonism. My academic articles appear in Harvard Theological Review, Journal of Early Christian Studies, and more. I am a contributor to several edited volumes including the The Next Quest for the Historical Jesus, The Oxford Handbook of New Testament, Gender, and Sexuality, and more. For a full list see my CV or my Academia.edu page.
In my public scholarship I also am a frequent speaker at conferences and universities. If you are interested in inviting me to speak, please contact me.
